Standardized Testing Goes Live!

State standardized testing today in Math. A year of content, a couple weeks of test-taking strategy and practice, and the admonition on Friday to get lots of sleep. Assigned homework, a word problem, over the weekend; I couldn’t help myself, it’s habit, and it won’t do any damage. They’re pretty good test takers: focused, persistent, checking their work. I always have sugarless mint Lifesavers, strictly against the Wellness Policy and the Principal’s directive, for them; keeps them focused. Tables are all set apart, all the Math posters are taken down, and my Test Administrator’s Manual is all marked up, with the grade-appropriate passages highlighted. And we’ll all be on Google Chat to keep in touch. The cellphone-cheating/texting phenomenon is not an issue for me; my kids have been trained all year to have them in their backpack, and not a pocket.
Do you have standardized testing? Do you think it accurately/adequately measures their level and growth? How do you prepare them for testing? Do you have any test-day rituals? I’m interested in your reflections.
